I LAUNCHES INDEX

Damn! Why can’t I read Portuguese? Award-winning Portuguese newspaper i launches a new weekend magazine today – index. Looks ace. I mean, gotta love a weekend newspaper magazine with the balls (ahem) to put illustrated hand jobs, blow jobs and whatever else on its launch cover. Hats off (and everything else, too) to index!

ELLE UK

Oh my, just look at the June 2010 Elle UK subscriber cover. Isn’t it, well, just lovely. Elle UK was recently selected for the D&AD Annual and nominated for a D&AD Pencil. Looking at this, it’s well deserved. Yes, just lovely.

JUSTIN WALDRON

We became fans of Justin Waldron’s photographs last year on the release of his second zine Meanings of Moments. It’s now sold out. But he’s just released a third zine. Yaay! It’s called Seven Days and looks to be just as beautiful as the first two. We’re over the moon Justin found time to chat with Gym Class Magazine.

Hey Justin. Thanks for chatting with Gym Class Magazine. Where do you live/work?

Hello. I currently live and work near Kyoto and New York City.

What are the best/worst things about where you live/work?

New york is home to a studio space where my wife and I both live and work. It is a creative work environment – so our days are always productive. Kyoto is healthy for the everyday life. I often go to explore the mountains and countryside where I tend to capture more photographs these days. Wherever I am, I simply stay focused on the positive points.

You’ve published a few zines. They look great. What are they all about?

I like to self-publish. My heart goes into a series of processes – from capturing, to developing, to editing, to publishing. Each of these processes then become a whole, while retaining the feeling from each moment which I had originally felt.

How do you print/bind your zines?

For this mini-series, I hand selected a particular paper stock that I found suitable, hand-fed (papers always jam) a household inkjet printer, and then bind them with little staples.

Your first two zines are sold out. How do you promote your zines?

I simply send out an email announcing it’s release. New releases are sold at Panorama in Tokyo and Printed Matter in New York.

We’ve been checking out some of the photos on your website. Love ‘em. How do you describe your photographic style? Do you earn a living from photography?

I capture feelings found in my everyday – moments which reflect my inner-self. In regards to earning a living – still photography is now something I do for the love. Although, I occasionally do editorial assignments which allow me to work freely and with my heart. It is a nice contrast to the tranquil approach I use with photography. It is never forced when I shoot for self.

What was the last CD you listened to?

An Eddie Marcon album. But I am now listening to a new album by Honaga Yoko.

Where are you as you answer these questions? And if you look out the window, what do you see?

I am now at my workspace near Kyoto. Outside my window is a small vegetable garden and rice field.

Thanks for your time. Star!

EEFF

Fancy yourself as the next Scorsese, Cameron or Coen? Of course you do! Well London peeps, you’re in for some serious win. The East End Film Festival kicks off today and there’s a smorgasbord of things for you to get your filmmaker-in-training ass along to.

Über advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy is hosting a Filmmakers Centre which will be running surgeries, workshops and networking events throughout the Festival. For example, BAFTA is presenting a discussion between top creatives and department heads on production mishaps; the UK Film Council scrubs up for a script development surgery; a group of “all-round 3D gurus and geeks” (their words, not ours) are presenting a 3D workshop; and leading Brit producers and casting folk will be presenting a casting chinwag.

It’s all happening out east. Now, get out of bed. Have a wash. And sort yourself out. That eight-hour 3D biopic isn’t gonna make its self. More information about the Filmmakers Centre and programme here.

The Festival runs until 30 April.

Oh, and there’s also a full schedule of screenings for peeps happy just watching movies. Bless. The screening programme is here.

O.K. FESTIVAL

Gym Class Magazine was invited to participate in the exhibition at last weekend’s O.K. Festival (a three-day love-in for indie magazine makers and fans) in Arnhem. Yaay! Thanks guys.

We were unable to attend the event. Sadsies. But the organisers have uploaded a shed-load of great photos from the weekend. Included among them is the above pic… see Gym Class Magazine #04 there with the hot photo by Knotan on the cover? Yeah, sure you do. We’re in good company too… is that Anorak magazine? Yes, yes it is. And is that Grafik in the bottom right-hand corner? Yes again. Ace-ness!

Check out all the photos here.

COVERS EXHIBITION

Regular Gym Class Magazine readers will be familiar with the work of creative director by day / kick-ass illustrator by night John Paul Thurlow. We love his work. You may recall he created the cover of Gym Class Magazine #03 and the Winona Ryder illustration in the current issue.

Any-hoo, great news for London readers. His COVERS exhibition, running as part of the Sketchbook magazine pop-up, has been extended ‘til 1 May. More details about the exhibition here. Don’t miss the opportunity to check out Mr Thurlow’s lush magazine cover illustrations in the flesh… they really are… well, awesome.

Oh, and check out that lovely little vid up there. It was recorded at the exhibition’s private view earlier this month. Ace.

CHRIS CUNNINGHAM

Each December it seems like every other television advertisement is flogging over-priced eau de parfum or eau de cologne. Now, don’t misunderstand us, we here at Gym Class Magazine HQ love a good bottle of the smelly stuff (our current favourite is still Fantastic Man’s offering), but too many of the advertisements promoting it are just, well… bla.

There was one exception last year that caught our attention: Flora by Gucci. No one here has smelt it… but the advertisement makes us think we’ll love it… emotive and beautifully simple.

We discovered today Chris Cunningham directed it. Ace. He’s performing three live shows in the UK this week. We’re not sure what to expect, but should be pretty cool. Speaking with The Guardian Newspaper about the 75-minute audio/visual performance, Cunningham said: “It’s a work in progress really. It’s three giant screens, lasers and a soundtrack that will be like a big mixtape. It’s the closest I can get to what I want to do: the visceral sound of a live show but with massive screens like a cinema.”

MAD MEN

Gotta love it when the guys and gals from Mad Men meet with a client to pitch creative. Here’s a selection from their portfolio. Unfortunately it doesn’t contain the Hilton pitch from season three.

NICOLAS GUERIN

Check out the portrait of Roman Polanski on the cover of last Friday’s Film & Music section of The Guardian newspaper. It’s by photographer Nicolas Guerin. Love it!

BFI

50 years after it’s original release, the British Film Institute in London is running a season of films that may have inspired, or have been inspired by, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. They’re calling it, Psycho: A Classic in Context.

We caught today’s screening of (the original) The Manchurian Candidate. Class, man. Serious class. Next screening is… wait for it… John Carpenter’s Halloween. Yes, the original. And best! Breathe. Breathe. Gym Class Magazine HQ is abuzz with excitement. Here’s the trailer. Win!
