Gym Class Magazine’s silent partner went up into the loft on Saturday and liberated about eight or so years worth of The Face magazine. These have been promptly catalogued and added to Daniel Gray’s The Face group on flickr. Show the group (and the magazine) some well-deserved love.
Yes, it’s a very good day.
BLOG
The Gym Class Magazine sweatshop (er, studio) is busy pulling everything together for issue #06. Fashionably late copy is landing in our inboxes; photos are being re-touched and colour-corrected; illustrations are having the final strokes (and pixels) added.
As always, we’ve got ace people contributing… including a couple of Gym Class Magazine first-timers. More on them soon.
One regular contributor we’re happy to invite back into the fold is creative director and illustrator John Paul Thurlow (he’s a Gym Class Magazine fav). JPT created the cover of issue #03 and the Winona Ryder portrait in issue #05. Lovely stuff.
Below is a work-in-progress shot of the portrait JPT is drawing for issue #06. Ace much? Well, yes… as a matter of fact it is much ace. Thanks for asking. And thanks to JPT for contributing.
More information about Gym Class Magazine #06 soon. Not long now, peeps.
Oh… there’s (always) time for a quick plug. Limited copies of #05 (with JPT’s Winona Ryder portrait) and #03 (with JPT’s cover) are available here.

Coolio promo vid for Vans shot at the Stahl House in Los Angeles.
Ace UK-based designer Daniel Gray wrote about the Stahl House (and the Case Study House program) in Gym Class Magazine #03. We’re currently selling off issues #02 and #03 at a special bundle price to raise funds for #06 (out in a few weeks).

Here are the two current newsstand covers of Wallpaper* magazine. Well Coolio. There’s a third subscriber-only cover knocking about too, but we haven’t see it. Have you?
BLOG
We like DVD extra features. We actually listen to director commentaries, we laugh at the gag reels (oh how we laugh) and we love–love–love behind the scenes making of clips. So we’re super excited about the possibility of extra features on iPad magazine apps… especially behind the scenes clips from photo shoots. Oh the glamour. Here are a couple of clips circulating the interwebs right now. One’s better than the other (because one has bikes in it). Epic!

More coolio post has turned up at Gym Class Magazine world HQ. Today arrived POSTR and Under/Current via indie magazine subscription service Stack. And last week arrived the 2009 Annual Report of US-based graphic designer (and infographic celeb) Nicholas Felton. The Annual Report is sold out… no surprise… it really is something quite special. But, don’t worry, you can read more about it here… and why not also check out the interview UK-based graphic designer Daniel Gray conducted with Nicholas for Gym Class Magazine #04. It’s all good.
RAY GUN
Blog Nas Capas continues to be a favourite here at Gym Class Magazine world HQ. They’ve recently uploaded a selection of Ray Gun covers. Still relevant, Ray Gun’s genius. This Radiohead cover is a personal fav. There’s more Ray Gun goodness over on Chris Ashworth’s site (Chris was an art director at Ray Gun) here and here and here.
BEEF! & MEATPAPER
Check out issue 11 of meatpaper (an indie title from the US) and issue two of BEEF! (from German mega-publisher Gruner & Jahr). Both are a carnivore’s delight, but we can’t help but be wooed by the innovative art direction and first-class production value of the German newcomer. It’s got gold foiling on the cover and the ace fold-out recipe (debuted in the first issue) is back. Both titles avoid the cliches common in food magazines. The design team at BEEF! really do have fun with the title’s art direction… we love how they’ve presented ice-creams and sorbets as icebergs, the sliced images accompanying the review of knives is coolio, the cross-section of gourmet sarnies pressed against glass is ace, and the glossy soup close-ups are delightfully disgusting.
We’ve focussed on the lush layouts of BEEF! here, but thumbs up to both magazines.
ELLE UK
Okay, we know. We’re always banging on about Elle UK nowadays. We’ll give it a rest. Soon. In the meantime, this needs to be noted… we picked up the current issue yesterday and it has a section printed on matt stock! How ace is that? Like, very. Obviously. Is this a new development? Ace, man. Seriously ace. That’s all.
INDUSTRIE
Layouts from new fashion bi-annual Industrie (by London design group Saturday) have started to pop up. I’ve lifted these gems from here.
Loving the magazine’s look. Ace. I’m super excited, too, by the thinking behind the magazine: “Industrie is the first and only media title dedicated to presenting an independent, in-depth look at the fashion industry, going behind the scenes to chronicle the personalities, stories and defining moments in the world of fashion.”
