The new-look UK Esquire is out! We spoke to the magazine’s creative director David McKendrick! Ch, ch, check it.

Congrats on the new-look Esquire. The magazine’s working a youthful, US vibe. I understand you’ve tweaked the masthead. How’s it changed?

The masthead has changed quite considerably. It’s a paired back version of the US logo, which is the mother brand, so it seems to make sense. And it gives it a fresher more modern look; it’s maybe one of the reasons the magazine has a bit more of a ‘US vibe’?

Your Kelly Brook cover reminds us of a recent US GQ cover with Megan Fox. Coincidence or homage?

Well spotted. Yes. This was an early reference discussed with the photographer. We’re fans of US GQ, it’s a wicked men’s mag. Wait until you see next month’s cover, it certainly isn’t a homage to anything I’ve ever seen before! It’s truly crazy.

From a design perspective, is there a page or feature you’re especially proud of?

I’m really proud of all the features to be honest. We’ve had so much fun designing these and are free to experiment, thanks to our new editor. We really look forward to doing these. Declan Fahy has a huge part to play. Again, wait until you see next month’s!

Looking forward, then, what can readers expect from the design?

We’ll just keep the design moving on, getting better and constantly surprising the reader. The new Esquire is much harder work from a design point of view, but is so much more creative with scope to keep things moving. I think you can tell from me saying wait until you see next month’s… we’re really excited about each issue and developing the design.
