WIRED APP
My first go at the Wired iPad app. Woo-hoo.
First impression… it looks great. Images on the iPad look lush, there’s no denying it. And Wired’s hyperreal finish is perfect for Apple’s high-gloss screen.
I like to know where I am within a magazine. The Wired app is a little disorientating (on first use, mind). The scrubber is not how I remember it in the earlier test demo. Oh… hold on… just found the browser at the top of the app… yep, this helps with navigation greatly. Apologies, the browser’s not shown in the above vid.
Just like the printed magazine, there’s a serious amount of content. It warrants a lot more time to discover all the features and app extras. But on first use… the video is cool, the lego car is well ace and the interactive look at Mars missions (complete with glowing sun in the distance) is class.
The disappointing Interview magazine app left me cold. But Wired has got me excited again. The iPad offers a peek into an exciting touch-screen world; the first Wired app looks to be the perfect partner with which to explore it.

Excitingly, magCulture has linked to a NYT article that mentions an InDesign add-on that will enable print designers to also design and build the apps. That’s some serious win right there.
